Oh Lordy I love you David. What a beautiful post. Iโ€™m going to a party where weโ€™ll be reading the Declaration of Independence to each other and grilling hot dogs! Canโ€™t wait. Also, if you havenโ€™t seen this video yet, enjoy: https://x.com/megbasham/status/2073148329517560286/video/1?s=46

How do you explain the shift from 1976 centralized mobilization to 2026 decentralized celebration?

David Chapman's avatar

I don't know! What do you think?

I know nearly nothing about how the 1976 one was organized. I've read a little in the news about how the two different federal organizations created for 2026 one and why that didn't work well.

I also know nearly nothing about how the 2026 one was organized locally. My guess is that municipalities had standing committees for the regular annual July 4th celebrations, and those mostly just did what they do every year. Except for the ones who decided not to this year, because reasons.

Thank you for the explanation. I wouldn't know either; I was asking out of pure interest. As a non-US observer, I am fascinated by these dynamics. It seems to reflect a broader global shift: societies increasingly decentralizing toward local forms of organization, which are perceived as more authentic, while national or supranational ideologies gradually lose their grip.
